Happy Belated Arbor Day

May 22, 2023 | Irrigation, Landscaping, Tree Care

Late Show host and comedian Stephen Colbert once joked that he's never filled out a birthday card anywhere but the bathroom stall of the birthday dinner restaurant. Still, he's ahead of many of us who frequently send "Happy Belated" cards. But today's blog isn't about birthdays; it's about trees. So here goes: Happy Belated Arbor Day! Arbor Day was last month, but we're using today's blog to celebrate these towering giants of our landscape. The day's subject is tree services, questions, and benefits. So let's talk about trees in your SoCal yard.

Why Do We Love Trees?

towering trees shot from below There's a lot to love about trees, but how often do we take the time to think about it? They bring us joy and health benefits, especially in California, and a sense of awe.

Oxygen

While you may enjoy the fresh air in your backyard, we have some nearby neighbors who aren't exactly known for their air quality! The oxygen that trees produce is one of many practical benefits that they offer people all over the world. That's why Arbor Day is now celebrated worldwide as an opportunity to plant new trees and a reminder to perform tree service for existing ones.

Shade

Before theme parks, Hollywood, and expensive housing developments, Southern California was known for its warm, dry climate. It suits many species of plants and animals and can also benefit human health. But it can cost a lot to cool homes! One way to combat high energy costs is to mindfully plant trees to provide shade for your home or other buildings. In addition, many modern developers are considering climate change when planning communities and keeping buildings cooler while offsetting emissions with trees.

Beauty

We live in a state with diverse species that are practically unmatched in the country. For example, there are over 1400 tree species in California! Even the urban forest of Southern California has a robust 114! Each tree brings its unique beauty, from towering redwoods to flowering dogwoods. And don't forget our abundant fruit trees! But there may be no tree more emblematic of our part of the state than the palm tree. Our warm and dry climate supports many palm species including Canary Island Date Palm, Mexican Fan Palm, California Fan Palm, and Queen Palm. Still, it's worth noting that only one species is native: the California Fan Palm.

Tree Services: What Do Trees Need?

It's easy to see why we love trees and spot how they serve us and the world. But how do we give back? What tree services should we be doing to keep our trees healthy and beautiful?

Basic Needs

Let's start with the basics, shall we? For the most part, trees need the same things as the rest of your landscape's plants: water, soil, sunlight, fertilizer, and mulch. The amount of each resource necessary for a tree's survival varies quite a bit by species. As mentioned earlier, the palm does quite well, even on very little water. When you have trees with higher water needs, it's advisable to set your trees on an irrigation timer. Likewise, when we do tree installations, we will always advise you on the best placement of your trees in relation to your other plants, their sunlight needs, and more. Another way you can help your trees retain the water they get is by adequately mulching around them. As part of your tree service maintenance program, trees need mulch replaced about once a year. They also likely will need fertilizer applied.

Trimming

Shears trimming a tree One of the ways to keep your trees looking their best is through trimming. Trees need regular trimming not only to maintain their shape but also to stimulate their growth. We generally trim the ends off of branches evenly around your tree.

Pruning

Unlike trimming, which is primarily (though not exclusively) aesthetic, pruning's purpose is tree health. We intentionally prune away unhealthy branches and other parts of your trees. This practice prevents sickness from spreading and promotes better growth. Pruning also removes potentially dangerous branches from your trees before they break off and cause property damage.

Let M1 Be Your Arbor Barber

With apologies to our towering green companions, we hope this Arbor Day celebration was better late than never. As you need tree services to keep your trees healthy, please keep M1 in mind! If your property is sadly tree empty, we can help there, too, with new tree installations!
