Weed Control to M1

Feb 20, 2023 | Weed Control

Southern California is a beautiful place with beautiful yards hospitable to many beautiful plants. Although perhaps most famous for palm trees and the oranges of our county's namesake, they're hardly a representative sample of all you can do with your land here. Unfortunately, the beautiful weather and fertile ground will grow plants you don't want as quickly as plants you do if you don't do your due diligence. That's why weed control is on the blog docket for today! Notice we said control, not weed killing or weed treatments. That's because there's more to controlling your weed than spraying, and pulling through those processes can be essential aspects of a weed-free yard.

Healthy Lawns and Gardens

The best and, in some ways, the easiest thing you can do for weed control is weed prevention. And the best weed prevention is having lawns and gardens so packed full of healthy plants that there's no room for weeds! Keeping the plants, you want healthy makes weeds' lives more difficult. Irrigation

At M1, we think irrigation is a winning proposition for homeowners. You've probably had the experience of forgetting to water one of your favorite plants or gardens and finding it wilted or dead. Irrigation prevents that while ensuring the perfect amount of water at the right time.

Nutrients

Knowledge is power, and knowing what your plants need and comparing it to your soil's acidity, and nutrient composition gives you the ability to know what to add. M1 fertilizes lawns and gardens to ensure they have the proper makeup to thrive.

Mulching

Finally, though healthy plants are the primary focus of a garden, pleasing aesthetics depend on contrast - positive and negative use of space. We've told you to crowd out weeds with healthy plants, but too many plants aren't always what you want for a beautiful garden. So what's the solution? Our trusty friend mulch, of course! Dark mulch will contrast your bright flowers while also creating a barrier to your weeds. So you're still leaving less space for weeds but creating the empty space contrast for the picture you're making for a garden. Plus, the mulch creates a backdrop that makes any determined weeds that get past your defenses obvious to the naked eye. Then you can catch them early and kill or remove them.

Lawn and Garden Treatments

Naturally, if growing a healthy garden or lawn impenetrable to weeds were easy, no one would need or sell weed killers. And anyone who's been to a hardware store knows that that's not the case! M1 will help you create the perfect ecosystem for your yard, and over time you'll have fewer and fewer weeds, but in the meantime, you have lawn and garden treatments for preventing and killing weeds. Preemergents

When it comes to weed control, your first line of defense is preemergents. Preemergent prevents weeds from ever blossoming. As the name implies, preemergents target plants in the stage before they emerge from the ground. Preemergents are a great way to prevent weeds, but they're not perfect for everything. For example, you can't use preemergents in a garden where your flowers aren't growing yet or a newly seeded lawn. That is because they target plants before they emerge and don't discriminate weeds from flowers. They will prevent any plants from emerging.

Postemergents

Post emergents are the weed treatment with which you're the most familiar. Just about every weed spray you can buy is for killing weeds that have already reared their ugly heads. They're what you need when you have weeds that you need to kill and can't or shouldn't pull.

Pulling Weeds

You might call pulling weeds the original weed control, and sometimes, it's still the appropriate response. But some weeds spread when you remove them. So it's essential to know with what you're dealing. A quick pull might be just what you need when you have a single weed in a garden that's obvious to your sight and won't spread.
